Killer Elite starring James Caan, The Wild Bunch, and The Getaway, are my three favorite Sam Peckinpah films. If you’re familiar with Joseph Campbell’s treatise on the hero myth, The Hero with 1000 Faces, each of these films pretty much follow it as if was a literal translation of the idea.
I’m knee deep in studying the whole idea of heroes and the myths that seem to manifest around them. No matter what story you choose, whether it’s from the bible, Camelot, 1001 Arabian Nights, or Greek mythology, the story and character structures are easily understood by simply studying Joseph Campbell and his thoughts on the hero myth.
Interesting stuff if you so choose to investigate on your own.
