head like a hole

On the right, where my picture used to be is what happens when I get bored. Of course, I blame peashelle for this act of miscreancy. If she hadn’t put a link to network for good on her site, I would have never thought of this at all… Please feel free to email me and … Read more

I have a question for anyone who reads this particular post. First I have to set it up. Let’s say that you are between the ages of 18 and 25, live at home with mom and dad, can’t afford to go to college and even if you could, you probably wouldn’t. Your prospects are few … Read more

Not that anyone would notice such things, but I’m currently light on posting because my brother, his wife and son, Damian are in town. Damian is two and change, and is already exhibiting the kind of athletic talent that his father possessed at his age. The kid can throw a football, appropriately sized for his … Read more

Back during the halcyon days of the Internet, Craig Newmark, a young web programmer, began a list detailing cool events in San Francisco as a favor to the community. As time passed, the list grew and people used it as the primary method for sharing information about such topics as housing, events, and most notably, … Read more

Island fever is a very real concept. Limey might understand it to a certain extent, but since he can easily make it across the channel to mainland Europe, it isn’t the same type of island fever you get when you live in Hawaii. Hawaii is separated by 2200 miles of open ocean from the U.S. … Read more

The world view of most people can best be represented by shades of grey. They tend to prefer grey areas as it allows wiggle room just in case they make a mistake… they can point to the varying shades and say, “well, I didn’t say X or Y, so I can’t be blamed.” I, on … Read more

Dawn requested an image of the Red Queen and I and this is the only picture I have on my computer that shows us both and in a relatively flattering light. It was taken shortly before we moved to Maui in 2004. As you can see, I’m a dirty mexican and she’s a lily-white girl. … Read more

oh brother where art thou

My brother, his wife, and two year old son will be visiting with the red queen and I in September. He is 5 years younger than I am and the road to our current relationship is as winding as any, and more complex than most.

I wasn’t much older than 7 or so when a good portion of his supervision fell on me. Not being much older than my charge, I’m sure I made more mistakes than would normally be expected from a primary caregiver. Too much latitude, too many errors in judgment, too late with the right choices. Those phrase pretty much sum up my first and last job as an older brother.

The one thing I could be proud of, aside from the fact that he didn’t end up in prison, is the fact that he became one of the most gifted athletes I’ve ever seen. Even when he was 3-4 years old, he could do things on a playing field that many kids three times his age could only dream of doing.

Limey recently wrote a post about how he almost joined the military. I have a similar story to tell, but possibly not as entertaining… When I was in high school, I was… let me see… how to phrase this… cut from a slightly rougher cloth. As such, I was often in a great deal of … Read more
